Hugo Technology is pleased to announce the mobilisation of a new pathology equipment field service programme in partnership with a leading laboratory technology Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).


The programme will provide specialist engineering support for advanced automated systems used within histopathology laboratories. These technologies support important stages of tissue preparation, including the controlled facing and trimming of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks and the automated production of consistently prepared tissue sections for further analysis.


Once the mobilisation has been completed and the engineers have achieved the required competency approvals, Hugo Technology will deliver installations, preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, breakdown repairs, planned maintenance, predictive maintenance support and parts management across England.


Three Hugo Technology field service engineers — Jaswinder Singh, Josh Blackmore and Whesley Lirag have completed an intensive technical training course in Europe. The engineers are now progressing through a structured hypercare and shadowing programme before moving into independent service delivery.


The launch represents more than the addition of another technology to Hugo Technology’s growing service portfolio. It demonstrates the cross-functional preparation required to mobilise a new OEM partnership while protecting the manufacturer’s service standards, customer relationships, technical knowledge and brand reputation.



Expanding Hugo Technology’s Pathology Equipment Field Service Capability


Pathology laboratories depend on carefully controlled processes to transform tissue samples into high-quality slides that can be reviewed and interpreted.


Traditionally, important stages of this workflow have required significant manual intervention. Tissue blocks must be prepared correctly, accurately aligned and sectioned to produce slides of sufficient consistency and quality for subsequent staining, scanning and diagnostic analysis.


Automation is increasingly being introduced to support these processes.


The systems included within this new programme are designed to automate elements of tissue-block preparation and microtomy. One system supports the controlled facing and trimming of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks. The other automates the precision sectioning of tissue blocks and the preparation of tissue sections on slides.


These are sophisticated laboratory systems operating within demanding pathology workflows. Their performance depends not only on the underlying technology but also on effective installation, appropriate operator preparation, carefully controlled maintenance and access to trained technical support when faults occur.


For the manufacturer, creating a sustainable service model therefore requires more than simply finding engineers with general laboratory experience. A New OEM Partnership Built Around Long-Term Service Delivery


The relationship was developed through Hugo Technology’s commercial function, led by Business Manager Stephens Alexander.


The commercial process focused on understanding the manufacturer’s requirements, installed-base expectations, technical complexity and desired customer experience. Those requirements then had to be translated into a practical operating model covering engineering capacity, geographic coverage, training, compliance, operational coordination and long-term service delivery. Ultimately, the comemrcial team aligns both organisations around how the partnership would work in practice and how Hugo Technology would progressively develop the capability to represent the manufacturer effectively in the field.


This includes liaising with relevant stakeholders across both organisations, defining:


The equipment and service activities within scope.

The geographic requirements across England.

The number and profile of engineers required.

The OEM training and certification pathway.

The shadowing and competency-assessment process.

Service documentation and reporting requirements.

Spare-parts management and traceability controls.

Escalation routes during mobilisation and hypercare.

The expected service delivery non-negotiables.

Negotiating a suitable commercial agreement.


The result is a structured pathology equipment field service programme designed to support the manufacturer’s present requirements while creating a foundation that can develop as the installed base and service demand evolve.

Operations & Field Service Management:

Selecting the Right Field Service Engineers


One of the earliest technical priorities was selecting engineers with the appropriate capabilities and approach for the programme.


Supporting automated pathology equipment requires more than the ability to complete a routine maintenance procedure. Engineers must understand how the equipment interacts with the wider laboratory workflow and appreciate the potential operational consequences of equipment downtime.


They must also be able to work methodically, follow controlled documentation, communicate effectively with laboratory personnel and escalate technical issues through the correct channels.


Sam Alexander-Weller, Field Service Manager and Charlotte Griffiths, led the technical resource-identification and resource-planning processes respectively. This included selecting the engineers, establishing appropriate technical leadership for the programme and ensuring that the chosen team could commit to the complete training, shadowing and competency-development pathway.


Jaswinder Singh, Josh Blackmore and Whesley Lirag were selected to form the initial engineering team. Their selection reflected a combination of technical ability, field service experience, learning agility and the professional behaviours required to represent an OEM.


The programme is deliberately beginning with a focused engineering team. This allows training, shadowing and feedback to be closely managed while the engineers build product-specific knowledge and practical experience.


Completing Seven Days of Certified OEM Technical Training


The three engineers travelled to Europe to complete an intensive seven-day formal training course delivered by the manufacturer.


The programme combined theoretical learning with practical work on the equipment. It was designed to develop an understanding of the systems, their major assemblies, operating principles, installation requirements, service procedures and fault-diagnosis processes.


Training included the technical disciplines required to support automated tissue preparation and sectioning systems, including:


System construction and component identification.

Installation requirements and initial system preparation.

Mechanical and electrical operating principles.

Preventative and planned maintenance procedures.

Fault identification and diagnostic techniques.

Corrective maintenance and component replacement.

Safe handling of sensitive assemblies.

Manufacturer documentation and service reporting.

Parts identification and escalation requirements.

Practical service exercises and competency assessment.


The engineers successfully completed the formal programme and received certification confirming their participation in the manufacturer-led training.


Certification is an important milestone, but it does not represent the end of competency development.


Classroom and workshop training provide the technical foundation. Field competency is then reinforced through observation, supervised activity, practical exposure and structured feedback in live customer environments.


That progression is now taking place through a hypercare programme.

Moving From Training Into Hypercare and Shadowing


The programme is currently in its hypercare phase.


Hugo Technology’s engineers are not yet undertaking independent customer-site work. Instead, they are shadowing experienced manufacturer personnel during installations, service interventions and repair activities.


This approach allows the engineers to see how the formal training translates into real laboratory environments.


They can observe the practical differences between customer sites, understand how service activity must be coordinated around pathology workflows and gain direct exposure to the types of technical issues that may arise during installation and ongoing use.


Shadowing also gives the manufacturer an opportunity to assess each engineer’s development before independent work is authorised.


The hypercare model includes:


Supervised customer-site exposure.

Shadowing during installations and repairs.

Review of service procedures and documentation.

Regular technical feedback.

Competency monitoring and progressive sign-off.

Validation of escalation routes.

Review of spare-parts requirements.

Close coordination between the manufacturer and Hugo Technology.

Early identification of any additional training requirements.


Over the next three months, the engineers are expected to progress through increasingly advanced stages of supervised activity.


The transition into independent delivery will be controlled by demonstrated competency rather than by a predetermined date alone. Engineers will only undertake work independently once the appropriate technical standards and manufacturer approvals have been achieved.


Senior representatives from the manufacturer have already provided positive feedback about the Hugo Technology engineers. They have particularly recognised their enthusiasm, technical engagement, willingness to learn and eagerness to understand the equipment in depth.


This early feedback provides a strong foundation for the next phase of the programme.


Preparing to Deliver the Complete Equipment Lifecycle


Once mobilisation and competency sign-off have been completed, Hugo Technology’s scope will cover the principal field service requirements associated with the equipment lifecycle.


Equipment installation


Engineers will support the installation and technical preparation of new systems at customer locations across England.


Installations must be carefully planned and coordinated. The work can involve site readiness checks, delivery coordination, equipment positioning, assembly, technical configuration, functional verification and completion of the required service documentation.


The objective is to ensure that equipment is installed consistently and prepared for use in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedures.


Preventative and planned maintenance


Scheduled maintenance helps protect equipment reliability, identify developing issues and reduce the likelihood of avoidable disruption.


Hugo Technology’s engineers will complete planned service activity using the manufacturer’s procedures, documentation and approved maintenance requirements.


Maintenance records will be completed in line with the agreed operating model, giving the OEM appropriate visibility of the work completed and any technical observations requiring further attention.


Corrective maintenance and breakdown repairs


When an equipment fault occurs, the engineering team will provide structured fault diagnosis and corrective support.


The service model will include fault investigation, approved component replacement, functional testing, reporting and escalation where additional manufacturer support is required.


The purpose is not simply to complete an individual repair. It is to restore the equipment appropriately while maintaining a clear technical record and protecting the consistency of the manufacturer’s service experience.


Predictive maintenance support


As service history and equipment information develop, the programme may also support a more data-informed maintenance approach.


Recurring faults, component history, service observations and equipment behaviour can help identify opportunities for earlier intervention. Used appropriately, this information can support maintenance planning and help reduce preventable disruption.


Predictive maintenance does not replace planned maintenance or engineering judgement. It complements them by using available information to identify patterns and support more informed service decisions.


Parts management


Specialist pathology equipment can contain high-value and technically sensitive components.


Parts management must therefore be controlled carefully. The process extends beyond sending a spare component to an engineer. It includes secure receipt, appropriate storage, inventory accuracy, traceability, allocation, shipment, return, quarantine and reconciliation.


Hugo Technology’s compliance and operational teams have developed the necessary controls to ensure that parts are managed consistently and that their status can be traced throughout the service process.

Embedding the Manufacturer’s Requirements Within Hugo Technology’s QMS


A successful OEM field service partnership depends on the service provider being able to integrate the manufacturer’s requirements into a controlled quality framework.


Hugo Technology is certified to ISO 13485 and ISO 14001. Its quality management system supports controlled documentation, training records, equipment management, complaints handling, corrective actions, process review and traceability across medical and laboratory equipment programmes.


For this mobilisation, Neil Howard, Systems and Compliance Manager, and the wider compliance team worked through the manufacturer’s requirements and mapped them into Hugo Technology’s operating processes.


This included preparing and reviewing controls covering:


Engineer training and competency records.

Approved service documentation.

Work-instruction management.

Service-report completion.

Parts receipt, storage and traceability.

Control of non-conforming or quarantined parts.

Technical escalation.

Customer feedback and complaints.

Record retention.

Process review and continuous improvement.


The compliance team also presented Hugo Technology’s quality management framework during the OEM’s assessment and onboarding activities.


That engagement provided the manufacturer with visibility of how its requirements would be governed once the programme moved from commercial discussion into operational delivery.


Coordinating Training, Resources and Customer Readiness


Operational mobilisation is often where a commercially agreed programme either becomes deliverable or begins to encounter difficulty.


Engineers must be released for training without disrupting existing commitments. Travel and accommodation must be coordinated. Shadowing days must be aligned with manufacturer personnel and customer availability. Parts and documentation must be ready, and service activity must eventually be incorporated into the day-to-day scheduling process.

Her role included aligning the training arrangements, preparing the operational team, coordinating engineer availability and ensuring that the customer service and scheduling functions understood the requirements and SLA commitments of the new programme.


Charlotte and her team have also supported the allocation and booking of engineer days during the shadowing period.


This work is essential because technical competency cannot be developed in isolation. The right engineer must be available in the right location, at the right time, with the correct information and support.


As the programme moves toward independent delivery, the operations team will continue to coordinate field activity, customer communication, resource planning, parts availability and escalation.


Working as an Extension of the OEM


Hugo Technology’s objective is not simply to provide additional engineering capacity.

The objective is to operate as an effective extension of the manufacturer.


For the customer using the equipment, the service experience should remain aligned with the standards and behaviours associated with the OEM’s brand. That means the engineer must understand not only the technical procedure but also the expected communication, reporting, escalation and customer-care requirements.


Achieving that alignment requires attention across every function involved in mobilisation:


The commercial team must negotiate and prepare a suitable commercial proposal, including internally agreed commitments and SLAs.

The operations team must convert those commitments into a workable service model, with efficiencies at heart.

The field service team must select and develop the right engineers and ensure continual review of scope.

The compliance team must embed the requirements within controlled processes.

The engineers must apply their training professionally at customer sites.


It is this combination of capabilities that allows an independent service organisation to provide more than outsourced labour.

The immediate priority is to complete the hypercare and shadowing period successfully.


Jaswinder Singh, Josh Blackmore and Whesley Lirag will continue to gain practical experience alongside the manufacturer’s technical personnel. Their progress will be assessed through observed work, technical feedback and completion of the required competency stages.


At the same time, Hugo Technology’s operations, compliance and field service teams will continue validating the supporting processes. This includes reviewing how work is scheduled, how parts move through the service network, how technical issues are escalated and how service information is captured and shared.


Once the required approvals are achieved, the engineers will progressively take responsibility for service activities across England.
